What actually comes out of a Manchester carpet
City carpets carry a particular load. Brake dust and road grit off the Mancunian Way and the main radial roads travels in on shoes and settles at the base of the pile, where a vacuum cannot reach it. It is abrasive. Every time somebody walks on it, it cuts the fibre a little more, and that is what turns a hallway grey in a way no amount of vacuuming fixes.
Hot water extraction flushes that out of the backing rather than lifting the surface off it. The van-mounted unit heats the water, injects it through the pile with the pre-spray already working, and pulls it back out with the soil in it.
A rotary bonnet machine, which is what most of the cheapest quotes in the city mean, wipes the top of the pile. The grit stays in the backing and wicks back up inside a fortnight. Ask whoever quotes you which one they are bringing, and ask to look in the waste tank afterwards.
Access, parking and the city centre flats
This is the part that separates Manchester from the rest of our patch, and it is worth saying on the phone when you book.
The mill conversions in Ancoats and the Northern Quarter have no loading bay and often no lift worth the name. The newer blocks at Spinningfields, First Street and the Quays have loading access but want a permit and a signature at a security desk. Either way the hose runs a long way from the van, and upper floors are routine — we just need to know which floor so enough hose comes off the reel.
Where the van genuinely cannot get near the door, the work is done on a portable unit instead. It is slower, and it is worth knowing in advance rather than on the doorstep.
Older housing, and why it dries differently
South Manchester timber floors
Largely suspended timber — the Victorian and 1930s stock through Didsbury, Chorlton and Withington. Air moves under the boards, so a cleaned carpet dries from both sides and is usually walkable in socks straight away.
Terraces and concrete slabs
Terraces closer in, and anything with a concrete slab poured over the original floor, can only dry upwards. Same carpet, same machine, longer wait. The cleaner will tell you which you have while the machine is still running.
