The first job on any leather suite is working out what the leather actually is, because the three common finishes want three different things and the wrong one marks the hide permanently.

Identify the hide first. The wrong product on the wrong finish does not wash out.
The water drop test
A drop of water on an unseen part of the seat tells most of the story, and you can do it yourself in ten seconds before anybody quotes you.
- If it beads and sits on top, there is a coat on it — pigmented or semi-aniline
- If it soaks in and darkens the leather, it is aniline or close to it
- If it leaves a ring on a napped surface, it is nubuck or suede and cleans dry
What cleaning fixes, and what it does not
Cleaning takes off body oil, hand grease, hair product, food, the grey film that builds on the front edge of a seat cushion, and the ground-in soil in the creases. Conditioning afterwards puts flexibility back so the hide stops drying towards a crack.
It does not fix colour that has already gone. Once the pigment has worn off the arm and the hide underneath is showing, that is a recolour — a different piece of work with a different price. Nor does it reverse a crack, close a split at a seam, or lift dye that has transferred out of dark denim into a pale seat, which sits in the leather rather than on it.
Anyone who tells you a clean will bring back worn colour is selling you something. Better to know at the quote stage.
