Re-stretching a rippled carpet
Ripples and waves across a floor almost always mean the carpet was kicked in rather than power stretched when it was fitted, and it has relaxed. Damp weather and underfloor heating both make it show up faster.
It is not a cosmetic issue. A ripple is a trip hazard, and every time somebody walks across a wave the fibre at the crest takes the wear, so the carpet develops a permanent line down it.
The repair lifts the carpet off the gripper along the affected edges, re-tensions it with a power stretcher, and re-trims. It is a couple of hours in a normal room and the carpet is walkable straight afterwards. If the gripper itself has failed — common where a concrete floor has been drilled badly — that gets replaced at the same time.
Patches, burns and pet damage
A cigarette burn, an iron mark, a stray ember from an open fire, a bleach splash, or a corner the dog has chewed all come out the same way: cut the damage out square, cut a matching plug from somewhere it will never be seen, and bond it in.
The plug has to come from the same carpet. Inside a fitted wardrobe, under the sofa, from behind a door, or from the offcut in the loft if the previous owner left one. Pile direction matters — a plug put in facing the wrong way catches the light and is more obvious than the burn was. Get it right and you will not find it afterwards without being told where to look.
Bleach is the exception. Bleach has removed the dye rather than added a stain, so it cannot be cleaned out. It is a patch or nothing.
Seams, door bars and thresholds
Doorway seams fail first because that is where the traffic concentrates and where the two pieces were joined in the first place. A seam that has opened can be re-joined with fresh seaming tape provided the edges have not frayed too far back. Left long enough, the edges unravel and the repair needs a strip taken out and a new join made further in.
Loose or missing door bars are worth fixing on the same visit. A carpet edge that is not held down wears at a rate you would not believe once it starts lifting.

The 1930s stock
Didsbury, Chorlton and Withington throw up gripper failures on the original concrete hearth floors, and seams opened across wide knocked-through lounges. The join runs straight through the busiest part of the room, which is the worst place for it.
The mill conversions
Ancoats and the Northern Quarter are usually a different job: a carpet laid over an uneven original floor, so the ripples are following the floor rather than the tension, and re-stretching alone will not settle it. That gets said on the visit rather than after the invoice.
When a repair is not worth it
We will tell you. A repair is the wrong call when:
- the backing has perished
- the pile has been walked flat until the fibres have split
- there is no matching carpet anywhere in the house to take a plug from
In those cases a repair leaves you with a visible patch in a carpet that is finished anyway. That conversation costs nothing and it is better had on the phone.
Cleaning and repair in one visit
